Burlington's City Council has taken steps toward allowing non-citizens to vote. The move would require the state legislature to approve. If it goes through, this would allow former refugees to have a greater say in what happens in the community. For more details, check this link.
Krishna Bhandari, Niaza Semiç and Son Do attended the Language Access & Communication Expo on Sept. 28 at UVM. The UVM Medical Center began hosting this event as part of its work to improve the experience of patients and their families, many of whom do not speak English as their first language. The hospital offers ASL interpreters for Deaf, hard of hearing and DeafBlind patients and their companions, as well as spoken language interpreters for patients who need interpretation.
Congratulations to the International Club! Here is their acceptance letter:
Congratulations! The Burlington International Club was nominated to receive a Roots of Prevention Award for all your efforts to create the All Are Welcome initiative and promote inclusiveness and acceptance for all. Our selection committee was very impressed by all the work the both of you both and the club have done to improve our community. We would like to honor you and any club members interested in attending at our annual Roots of Prevention Award Celebration on April 18th with the "Outstanding Group Award". The Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community is a substance abuse prevention coalition in Burlington. Every year we hold an award celebration to publicly recognize individuals, programs, and organizations who have positively impacted Burlington by providing prevention opportunities and supporting health and wellness in the community. This month, several visitors from South Burlington School District visited Burlington High School to see first-hand the progress Burlington schools are making in changing the way English Learners enter the district. The intake center consists of multilingual liaisons, who help connect families with schools, and a dedicated teacher to complete initial screenings for new arrivals. Although EL Director Miriam Ehtesham-Cating said the Welcome Center is still in its infancy, visitors from the neighboring district were applauding efforts to help make new students and families have an easier time entering school.
